Solo and Ensemble
Solo and Ensemble one of the most rewarding musical growth experiences that our students participate in. Each year our students prepare an individual solo and perform in one large ensemble (brass choir, woodwind ensemble, percussion ensemble). Performances are critiqued and each group receives constructive feedback from expert adjudicators. Solo & Ensemble is sponsored by the Wisconsin School Music Association.

FINAL INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES FOR FESTIVAL PERFORMANCES
Kimberly High School - March 1 & 2, 2024
1. Before you leave school on Friday, be sure you have your INSTRUMENT and any accessories (reeds, mutes, mouthpiece, neck strap, valve oil). Make sure you bring ALL OF YOUR MUSIC!! Think this through before you leave the building on Friday!! The instrument locker room will not be open the day of the festival.
2. DO YOU HAVE YOUR JUDGE’S COPY??? Make sure it is labeled (in pencil) with your name, school, and the MEASURES NUMBERED. Judge's copies of solos being played by multiple people without an accompanist will be kept in a plastic bin in the homeroom area/gym. Be sure to put the judge's copy back in the box as soon as you are done with your solo for the next person who needs it.
3. Get a good night’s sleep. You need to be mentally prepared for this day.
4. DRESS UP. First impressions can make a world of difference with a judge.
(Gentlemen - Dress shoes, socks, pants, shirt and tie)
(Ladies - dresses)
5. BE AT THE SCHOOL 1 HOUR BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED PERFORMANCE TIME! You will need this extra time to find a parking spot and get your bearings once inside the school.
6. Unpack in the homeroom (Auxiliary GYM). Locate your performance site.
7. Warm up 30 MINUTES before you are to perform. DO NOT PLAY YOUR INSTRUMENTS IN THE HALLWAYS, as this will result in disqualification. Long tones, scales, lip slurs (brass), short passages in your solo are good to warm up with. Don’t put yourself at a disadvantage by not warming up thoroughly.
8. Report to your performance room about 5 MINUTES before you play. Let the room monitor know you are there, and if you have switched performance times with someone else from Kimberly High School performing in the same room. Give the room monitor your judge’s copy. WAIT FOR YOUR ACCOMPANIST, even if he/she is late.
9. If there is a conflict in times, report it to the room chairman. LARGER ENSEMBLES TAKE PRIORITY. It is your responsibility to alert the room monitor IN ADVANCE of any conflicts.
10. As you wait, keep blowing warm air through your instrument so you stay in tune.
DO NOT PLAY IN THE HALLWAYS.
11. When it is your turn, go to the front of the room and tune with the piano.
A couple of scales are encouraged, especially if you have been waiting.
12. INTRODUCE YOURSELF, THAT YOU ARE FROM KIMBERLY HIGH SCHOOL, THE NAME YOUR PIECE, THE COMPOSER, YOUR ACCOMPANIST, AND AN INTERESTING ASPECT OF THE PIECE YOU WANT YOUR AUDIENCE TO LISTEN FOR (AS DIRECTED IN THE FORM FROM YOUR SOLO PACKET). Speak loudly and articulately! PRACTICE DOING THIS SEVERAL TIMES!!
13. Be PROFESSIONAL as you perform. Be sure to stand tall (good posture) and be proud. Acknowledge applause with a smile or a slight bow.
14. THANK YOUR ACCOMPANIST. A thank you card and a word of thanks is in order for these people who have taken time out of their busy schedules to play for YOU. They need to know that their work is appreciated. This is common courtesy.
15. After you play, wait and LISTEN to the judge’s comments and for your music to be returned to you. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR JUDGE’S COPY BEHIND! (Return it to the bin unless your accompanist is holding on to it.)
---If more than one student is playing the solo you are performing, your accompanist will hold on to your judge’s copy. (Judge’s copies are to be returned to Mr. Gall/Mr. Goethals on Monday.)
16. CONGRATULATIONS! You made it! Regardless of the rating, you can be proud of your efforts. Because of this entire experience, you are a better musician.
OTHER ITEMS OF CONCERN:
-LISTEN to students from other schools. You will learn a great deal about performing.
-As you sit in the audience, be respectful of the performers and the judge. BE QUIET when you are in the performance rooms. It is not appropriate to kid around with your neighbors, or even WORSE, the student about to perform. AT NO TIME SHOULD YOU TALK DURING A PERFORMANCE! The judge and performer(s) needs to be able to concentrate. Polite applause is appropriate when a performance concludes.
-Support your fellow band members. A word of encouragement or a pat on the back can make a world of difference.
-RATINGS will be posted every hour. Judge’s Cards/Comments will be given to you next week.
-FOOD SERVICE will be available, at cost. You may “brown-bag-it” if you wish.
Our best wishes to you all! You have worked long and hard for this day. Do your best, and enjoy the day of performances.
